Governor Robert W. Furnas Arboretum
An affiliate site of the Nebraska State Wide Arboretum
Named in honor of Robert W. Furnas, Nebraska's second elected governor who on April 8, 1874 proclaimed the first Arbor Day observance in Nebraska.

The Arboretum site is owned by the Brownville Fine Arts Association and shares the site with a historic one-room school house that is now an art gallery.

Preparing soil
Over 100 species, including European Beech, Sweetgum, Blackgum, Willow Oak, Fringe Tree, Balkan Pine and Japanese Kerria, have been tried in the Arboretum.

The Governor Furnas Arboretum was planted in 1992 - 93 (preparations shown above), part of a major arboretum development project designed and partially funded by the Nebraska State Wide Arboretum's Community Landscape Improvement Program.
